eco church

St Luke’s is an Eco Church.

As part of the Parish of Walthamstow, we joined with many other churches across the country to declare a climate emergency in 2021. We are working hard to be more sustainable with the help of the Eco Church award scheme, set up by A Rocha UK for churches who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth.

We achieved a Bronze Award by reviewing our worship & teaching, how we use our land, our community & global engagement and our lifestyle choices. We are aiming to keep improving towards a Silver and Gold award in the future.

Join us at our allotment project to help us grow green!

Declaration of a Climate Emergency

Climate change is here; it’s hurting people already; it’s getting worse. We recognise that in the face of the increasing changes in the climate that it is necessary to declare an emergency.

The speed of change in the climate is overtaking our present efforts to mitigate the effects. The situation requires urgent action. We have no more than 10 years to take the necessary action.

We unite with others to press national and local government institutions, large businesses and corporations and other powerful bodies to take faster action against the effects of climate change.

We are Christians and we are called to show love to our neighbours around the world, who are already suffering the effects of climate change. They need justice.

We are Christians and we act with hope. We refuse the temptation to despair. We reaffirm our trust in the love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our targets:

  • By end of July 2022 we commit to achieving these targets.

  • A reduction of our carbon footprint by 10%.

  • A measurable increase in our biodiversity.

  • The awarding of a Bronze Award from ECO Church (A Rocha).

From the Parish of Walthamstow, London, E17.

23rd May 2021.
